Feminism Through Art
As art is my creative outlet, I thought it would be really special to include some art I've made that I feel embodies feminism. Below are some of my works and why they are important to me and my studies! I also think these would be a great example of praxis.
America Was Great
I went to an event, "Women in Conversation with Winona LaDuke and Jamie Margolin. This quote really stuck out to me, and it was wonderful to see an older woman and a younger woman conversing and sharing both of their experiences.
1910s Vietnam
This was a piece I did for the "Prism Project Zine" in 2020. This zine features the history of the LGBT community throughout the 1900s - 2000s. I was able to work with so many artists and writers to make this zine happen. We even raised $200 for the Trevor Project in donations.
1940s Germany
This was another art Piece for the Prism Project Zine. This piece shows a transgender woman writing a letter and sending it to her sweetheart who is away. To read her letter, he must light a flame to the parchment that has her true words (in blue).
When Angels Speak of Love
This poem comes from the anthology "When Angels Speak Of Love" As a queer woman of color, being able to love who you want and feel free to do so, this poem and art is important to me because it's what I wish for in a better world. I love this poem by bell hooks because as much as she is a feminist, she wants love and to be loved too.
El Feminismo en España
This is not my art, but I felt it was important to add. This is artwork displayed en el Museo de Reina Sofía. As feminists, it is so important to see how other countries fight against injustices. It is also equally important to do *their* feminism, not just the feminism we as westerners think they need.
La Diablita
From an exercise in WGS 474 to create a feminist version of los imágenes de la lotería ! Chose to focus on El Dablito. In my version, she is a female demon who has a plus size body with muscular arms. She is also topless. Period.
The Movement
This is a quote from the Women In Conversation Event, by the younger speaker: Jamie Margolin. This quote spoke to me because I see a lot of younger people on TikTok trying to rework the world, but forgetting their past and the accomplishments their predecessors made before them. Collectively, we can suceed.
Free the Nip
I think one core component of feminism is being able to express yourself freely, and without ridicule. She is covering her eye to show that even though she may be educated on some topics, she is still blind to others, but is willing to learn.
Carmen Comic
The girl on the right panels is a trans character of mine. When asked her "real" (read: birth name) it is redacted because no one should have to tell people their birth names if they don't want to.
